Staff Interview Vol. 2: Susan LaCroix, LMFT
We interviewed one of BHT therapists, Susan LaCroix, LMFT, who is a founder of "Walk and Talk" therapy and provides thoughtful mental health support to the clients and communities. Susan has developed this unique program to support her clients, and we appreciate that her work can help more clients to improve their well-being.
Q: What led you to become a psychotherapist?
My first career was in journalism, mostly writing newspaper and magazine articles about social, political, environmental, and health-related issues. As I got older, I became more interested in people’s inner lives and relationships, and I decided to go back to school to become a therapist. What journalism and psychotherapy have in common is that both are focused on continuous learning, understanding, and truth seeking — whether about the outside world or about our personal experiences.
Q: Do you have any specializations as a therapist?
One thing I offer that is pretty unusual is walking sessions in Tilden Park. Many of my clients prefer “walk and talk” sessions, because it gives them a chance to get out in nature and leaves them feeling calmer, or more inspired or renewed. We all know that both exercise and being in nature are good for our mental health and well-being, so I’ve made walking sessions a large part of my practice.
Q: What do you like about working for Blue Humming Therapy?
There’s a culture of respect and appreciation at BHT that is very rare. Anyone who has had contact with Manami (founder and clinical director) or Miyo (operating director) knows that they are exceptionally kind, caring, and helpful people, who truly embody BHT’s core values of openness, trust, compassion, acceptance, and community.
Q: Do you have any goals or resolutions for the new year?
Yes! In this time of heightened threats toward so many groups of people, I especially want to provide support for those who are on the front lines, fighting for equality, justice, and social change. So all you activists out there, I hope you will reach out to Blue Humming Therapy to see how we can support you!
Susan has been seeing her clients mainly in East Bay.
